Dental crowns are made from resilient materials, such as durable, tooth-colored porcelain, that can withstand the pressure of daily biting and chewing. However, they can eventually become worn down or sustain injuries that can damage or dislodge them.
If you’ve just realized your restoration fell out, you might feel anxious or confused about what to do next. You might not consider it an emergency, but the underlying tooth is at risk of further harm the longer it remains untreated. Continue reading to learn about 3 steps you can take to avoid potential problems until you can get to your dentist’s office!
Step #1: Find the Crown
Depending on what happened, how old your crown was, and its current condition, there’s a chance that your dentist might be able to cement it back in place. But that’s only if you are able to find it.
Take a few moments to locate the dislodged covering, then gently rinse it with water to remove any dirt or debris. You can store it in an airtight bag or container somewhere safe where you’ll remember to take it with you when it’s time for your dental appointment. If you were injured, you may also need to swish some water around your teeth and gums to cleanse your mouth and prevent potential infection.
Step #2: Address Discomfort
If you took a blow to the face that knocked out your dental crown or bit into something so hard it was yanked out of place, you might also be feeling swollen or sore. Thankfully, there are several ways to help manage any associated discomfort until you can see your provider.
For example, you can place an ice pack against the sore side of your face for a temporary numbing sensation that can provide some much-needed relief. It’s also often safe to take the recommended dose of over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Step #3: Contact Your Dentist
Finally, if you haven’t already done so, you should call your dentist’s office to let them know what happened. Many offer same-day emergency appointments, so you don’t have to wait long to be seen, and they may provide dental sedation to help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your visit.
Then, they’ll examine your mouth and dental crown, if you have it, to determine the best course of action. If they can’t repurpose it, they can take impressions to make a new one.
The sooner you contact your dentist, the sooner they can restore your tooth so you can keep eating, speaking, and smiling confidently!
