A popular cosmetic treatment that many people get is BOTOX. It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, effectively boosting your facial aesthetics and the look of your smile! Many people will have a smooth recovery afterward, but some bruising is possible around the injection sites. The good news is that you can do your part in reducing or preventing it, so here’s a guide to all you should know about this situation.

Why Can Bruising Happen After Getting BOTOX?

Patients often experience bruising after they get BOTOX because the tiny blood vessels in their skin were disrupted during the process. This is normal for any type of injection, and it usually fades quickly, but it may seem more dire because it’s your face that’s affected. Thankfully, there are a couple of ways you can minimize your risk, such as:

  • Avoid medications and supplements that thin your blood. Of course, double-check with your physician to ensure it’s advisable for you, but aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and flaxseed oils are some that can make you more likely to bruise.
  • Don’t drink alcohol for 24 hours before and after your treatment, since it can thin your blood and increase your odds of bruising.

How Can I Prevent Bruising After My BOTOX Injections?

Once you get BOTOX and you do see some minor bruising, there are some ways you can limit it. These are some tips you can follow:

  • Use cold packs on the affected areas. The coolness constricts blood vessels and slows blood flow, while also reducing discomfort.
  • Keep your head elevated for the first few hours afterward and try not to bend over or lie down flat. These changes in positions can increase blood flow.
  • Don’t do strenuous exercise, as it can increase circulation and worsen this complication.
  • Try not to rub your skin and be gentle with it. You might be tempted to massage it or put some pressure, but these aren’t generally advised for at least the first couple of days.
  • Consider taking Arnica. This is a safe, popular supplement that’s been used for centuries and is known for aiding with swelling and bruising.

In the end, BOTOX is a great way to not only boost the look of your face but also your smile as well. While you may have bruising at first, it generally only lasts for a few days to two weeks. Follow the tips above, and you can do your best to avoid it straight out or manage it.
